Fusion Wall: The Engineered Backstop Wall Padding System

The Fusion Wall is Unlimited Sports Solutions' proprietary backstop and outfield wall padding system. It combines a 3/4" weather-treated sheathing backer, 3" high-impact foam, and an 18 oz. all-weather vinyl shell, secured to the wall with a tool-free UNISTRUT-and-Zeus-Clip trac system instead of face-screwed straps. It's built to withstand extreme outdoor weather, take repeated ball impact, and carry custom team branding or sponsor graphics on the padding and rear windscreen.

Why Wall Padding Matters

An outfield wall, backstop, or dugout fence doesn't feel dangerous, until a player is going full speed chasing a fly ball and doesn't have time to pick up where the fence line is. Collisions with hard-surface walls, poles, and backstops are one of the more preventable injury risks on a ball field, which is why padding has shifted from a "nice to have" upgrade to something governing bodies are actively writing into the rulebook.

The Fusion Wall exists to close that gap without turning your facility into a construction project every time you need to replace a worn-out panel. The foam core absorbs impact, the vinyl shell shrugs off weather and repeated ball contact, and the trac attachment system means a damaged section can be swapped out in minutes instead of scheduling a crew to re-drill the wall.

What Makes Fusion Wall Different From Standard Wall Padding

Most backstop and outfield wall padding is strapped or screwed directly to the wall face. Fusion Wall uses a channel-and-clip attachment system. A UNISTRUT rail is mounted to the wall, with padding hung and locked in via Zeus Clips. This means the panels install faster, sit flush, and can be removed or swapped without re-drilling the wall.

Standard Strap-On Padding Fusion Wall System
Attachment Face-screwed or strapped Tool-free UNISTRUT trac + Zeus Clip
Install speed Slower, panel-by-panel fastening Faster, panels hang on rail
Panel removal/replacement Requires re-drilling/re-fastening Lifts off rail, no new holes
Branding Limited Custom graphics on padding and rear windscreen
Hardware exposure Often visible Concealed by rear Privascreen windscreen

Where the Fusion Wall Fits

The fusion wall fits any facility with a hard-surface wall, fence, or backstop that a player could run or slide into. Common installs include outfield home-run fences, backstops behind the plate, dugout walls, and bullpen fencing. College and high school programs find installing the fusion wall useful to bring a venue up to current safety standards. Older facilities can give their backstop new life by installing a new fusion wall.

The best part, our fusion wall ships in configurable run lengths and mounts to a rail rather than the wall face itself. That means it works for a full outfield fence line or just the highest-traffic sections, like behind home plate, down the lines, or around dugout entrances. No custom fabrication needed for every job.

Built to Last: Installation & Lifespan

Because our fusion wall hangs on a UNISTRUT rail instead of being face-screwed panel by panel, a typical run goes up faster than strap-on padding. It also doesn't leave a wall full of fastener holes if a section ever needs to come down. Just slide the new padding right in. Posts are set on a consistent 4-foot spacing, so the system holds its line whether you're padding a short run behind home plate or a full outfield fence.

Day to day, the fusion wall is built to take the weather and keep taking it. The vinyl shell is rated for 3,000+ hours of UV exposure and stays flexible down to -30°F, so it won't crack or fade out from a full season of sun, rain, and temperature swings. The foam core's antimicrobial treatment keeps mildew and fungal growth from setting in over years of outdoor use, and because panels lift off the rail individually, a section that eventually does take too much damage can be replaced without touching the rest of the wall.

Rear Windscreen (Ultra90) - Conceals Hardware while adding privacy

Fusion Wall's rear side can be finished with a Privascreen/Ultra90 windscreen that hangs from the back of the system to conceal hardware and net/cable attachments.

NCAA Padding Requirements: What's Actually Mandatory

NCAA Rule 2.15 sets a hard deadline of January 1, 2027, for softball: any sideline or home-run fence built from a hard material (i.e. wood, concrete, or brick) at a facility hosting NCAA softball competition.

The padding has to start no higher than 1 foot off the ground and run to the top of the structure or 6 feet up, whichever is shorter. Backstop padding on those same hard materials is already required under Rule 2.3.4, so the 2027 deadline mainly extends an existing standard to the rest of the fence line. The NAIA has adopted the same requirement on the same timeline.

Baseball doesn't have a hard mandate yet. The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee recommends padding on all hard surfaces — backstops, sideline fences, and outfield fences — anywhere a player could realistically collide during play. It's currently written into the rules as a recommendation, not a requirement. Given that the same shift already happened in softball, facilities running both programs are increasingly padding baseball venues to the same standard now rather than waiting for it to become mandatory.

Branding & Custom Grpahics

Our fusion wall padding and its rear windscreen can both carry custom graphics. This can include team logos, sponsor branding, or field signage. We use HDI bonded or UV-coated digital print to customize it to your facilities needs. This turns the wall into a revenue/sponsorship surface as well as a safety feature.
